Orazio Licandro

Orazio Licandro is a Full Professor of Roman Law and Foundations of European Law at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania. He teaches courses including History of Political Institutions of the Greek and Roman World, Papyrology and History of the Ancient Document, History of the City and Citizenship, and Roman History. He also teaches at the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage in Catania and at Sapienza University of Rome. Internationally, he serves as a Visiting Professor at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (China), China University of Political Science and Law (Beijing), and universities in Spain.

His research focuses on Roman law, legal papyrology, epigraphy, and ancient political institutions. He is actively involved in national and international research projects such as PRIN 2022 'EXCERPTA', 'CAR – Carteggio Arangio-Ruiz', and 'Prometeo 3'. He collaborates with institutions including Sapienza University of Rome, Laurentian Library, and Chinese universities under projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China and the Ministry of Justice of China.

His scholarly contributions include directing the Class A journal CODEX: Romance Journal of Legal, Political, and Social Studies, and the book series Between East and West and Collectanea Graeco-Romana. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Bulletin of the Institute of Roman Law 'Vittorio Scialoja' and belongs to several academic societies such as the Italian Society of Legal History and the University Council of Papyrology.

Orazio Licandro supervises thesis students on topics ranging from Caesar and Augustus to Manichaeism and Theodoric. His international engagement includes being the contact person for the cooperative agreement between Zhongnan University and the University of Catania. He has participated in ERC projects and serves on scientific committees of major international research initiatives on Roman law and codification.
