Dr. Oral Robinson serves as a Lecturer and Honours Chair in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. With a distinguished academic background including a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Saskatchewan, a degree in Social Research from the University of Warwick, and a BSc in Sociology & Management Studies from the University of the West Indies, Robinson brings extensive expertise to their teaching and research roles.
Robinson's research focuses on migration patterns, ethnic relations, social interaction dynamics, and development issues, with particular emphasis on Caribbean communities and international student experiences. Their scholarly work examines intercultural contact, friendship formation, and identity construction within diverse social contexts.
Analysis of Robinson's recent publications reveals a strong thematic focus on Caribbean migration, international student experiences, and ethnic identity formation. The research demonstrates methodological diversity spanning qualitative interviews, survey research, and comparative analysis across multiple national contexts, particularly Canada and Caribbean nations.
As an educator, Robinson has consistently taught core sociology courses including SOCI 200 (Sociology of Families), SOCI 217 (Research Methods), SOCI 301 (Development and Underdevelopment), SOCI 302 (Racial and Ethnic Inequality), SOCI 380 (Sociological Research: Survey Methods), and SOCI 449 (Honours Tutorials) across multiple academic terms from 2016 through 2022.
Robinson currently leads two major research projects: Intercultural Contact and Friendship formation in Canada and Migration and identities in the Caribbean, reflecting their longstanding commitment to understanding migration dynamics and cultural interactions in both Canadian and Caribbean contexts.
