Emily Laxer is an Associate Professor of Sociology at York University's Glendon College, where she holds a York Research Chair in Populism, Rights, and Legality. She is actively engaged in contemporary research on populist political movements and their relationship with rights and legality in the Canadian context.
Dr. Laxer's research focuses on the intersection of populism, secularism, national identity, and Muslim integration in comparative perspective, particularly examining France and Quebec/Canada. She co-founded the Observatory of Populism in Canada, an interdisciplinary research hub that generates and showcases contemporary research on Canadian populisms. Her work spans political sociology, comparative politics, and migration studies with particular attention to how national contexts shape political discourse and integration policies.
Her scholarly publications appear in leading peer-reviewed journals including Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Nations and Nationalism, and Comparative Sociology. Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on comparative studies of secularism, national identity formation, and Muslim integration across France and Canada, with increasing attention to populism in recent years.

Dr. Laxer has secured significant research funding through her York Research Chair position, enabling her to establish the Observatory of Populism in Canada as a collaborative hub for interdisciplinary research. She has supervised numerous graduate students and collaborated with researchers across Canada and internationally on projects examining political discourse, secularism, and integration policies.
Through the Observatory of Populism in Canada, she leads a research team examining contemporary populist movements and their implications for Canadian democracy, rights frameworks, and legal institutions. The observatory serves as a platform for collaborative research, public engagement, and knowledge mobilization on this critical contemporary phenomenon.
