Professor Onno Kranenburg holds the position of Professor of Translational Surgical Tumor Biology at Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht, where he also serves as Chairman of the Utrecht Platform for Organoid Technology (UPORT) and Head of Laboratory Translational Oncology since 2005.
His research focuses on designing and testing new strategies for the prevention and treatment of metastatic colon cancer, with particular emphasis on the aggressive CMS4 subtype. Dr. Kranenburg's work explores how tumor cells experience significant stress during metastasis due to increased metabolism and oxygen radical production, investigating how to exploit this vulnerability to prevent cancer spread. Within his research group, clinicians and researchers collaborate in a translational context to develop innovative treatment approaches.

He coordinates the PhD program in Clinical and Translational Oncology since 2013 and chairs the translational research working group for the Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group (DCCG) since 2018. Professor Kranenburg emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, working closely with surgeons, medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, and radiologists to translate basic research into clinical applications. His work with UPORT has established standardized procedures and infrastructure for organoid research, bringing researchers and doctors closer to personalized cancer treatments.
Professor Kranenburg earned his PhD from Leiden University Medical Centre in 1995 and his MSc in Biochemistry from the same institution in 1991. His career progression includes Associate Professor in Surgery at UMC Utrecht (2003-2015), Senior Postdoc in Medical Oncology (2000-2003), and Postdoc at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam (1995-2000).
