Omar Vargas is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Spanish at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences, specifically within the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. His academic focus centers on Latin American literature, with particular expertise in the works of Gabriel García Márquez and Salvador Elizondo.
Research Interests: Vargas's research delves into the intersection of literature with mathematics and medical humanities. He explores how dementia serves as both a thematic and structural element in García Márquez's narratives, and how fractal theory can illuminate the spatial-temporal configurations in Latin American literature. His work also examines the arithmetization of writing, drawing parallels between mathematical concepts and literary techniques in Elizondo's works.
Publications: His recent peer-reviewed articles, all published in 2021, demonstrate a consistent engagement with narrative theory and interdisciplinary approaches. These include analyses of dementia's role in García Márquez's novels, the application of fractal geometry to literary texts, and the metamathematical dimensions of Salvador Elizondo's short stories.
