Omar McRoberts is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and The College at the University of Chicago. He holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago (1994), an M.A. from Harvard University (1997), and a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2000). His research focuses on religion, urban poverty, race, and collective action in Black urban communities.
His notable work includes Streets of Glory: Church and Community in a Black Urban Neighborhood, which examines religious life in Boston's Four Corners neighborhood and won the 2005 Distinguished Book Award. Current projects include studying Black religious responses to U.S. social welfare policy since the New Deal and an ethnographic study on cultures of death and dying in low-income Black congregations.
McRoberts' work bridges sociology of religion, urban studies, and race relations. His research highlights religion's complex role in addressing systemic inequality and shaping community resilience.
