Omar Granados is an Associate Professor in the Department of Global Cultures & Languages at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he also serves as Director of the UWL Institute for Latin American and Latino Studies. His work focuses on contemporary Latin American and Latino literature, Caribbean studies, film studies, migration studies, and literary translation. Dr. Granados holds a PhD in Latin American Cultural Studies from Emory University (2012) following a B.A. in Area and International Studies from Universidad de la Habana/University of Vermont (2005).
His research explores cultural approaches to migration, collective memory, and public scholarship. Notable projects include a public history initiative on the 1980 Mariel Exodus Refugee Camp Program in U.S. military bases. He teaches courses on Latin American literature, film, Latino studies, and Spanish language.
Recent publications analyze Cuban cyberactivism, post-dictatorial literature, refugee resettlement history, and cinematic representations of Cuban childhood. His work bridges academic research with community engagement, emphasizing historical narratives that connect marginalized communities with broader social dialogues.
Dr. Granados has presented at conferences such as the North Central Council of Latin Americanists (2016) and published in journals like Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal. His current projects continue exploring transnational Cuban identities and Wisconsin's underdocumented refugee histories.
