Alan West-Durán is a Professor of Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies at Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities. His work focuses on Caribbean literature, Afro-Cuban culture, and Latin American film. He holds a PhD in Latin American and Brazilian Languages and Literatures from New York University (1993). Awards include the Latino Prize for Literature in Poetry (1996) and recognition as an Honorary Member of the Golden Key Honor Society (2002). He has been nominated for Excellence in Teaching in 2003 and 2007.
His research integrates cultural analysis with historical contexts, emphasizing transnational dialogues and marginalized voices. Notable works include A Cuba Encyclopedia (2011) and Latino and Latina Writers (2004), both of which he edited. He is also a prolific translator, adapting works by figures like Alejo Carpentier and Rosario Ferré into English.
West-Durán’s scholarly output spans over three decades, with contributions to cultural studies, Afro-diasporic identities, and Latin American intellectual history. His translations bridge linguistic and cultural divides, enhancing accessibility to underrepresented narratives.
