Dr. Omar Faruque is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto's Department of Sociology. Previously, he served as an SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow (2019–2021) at Queen’s University, Adjunct Assistant Professor (2021–2024) in Global Development Studies at Queen’s, and Assistant Teaching Professor (2023–2024) at UNB’s Sociology Department. Earlier roles include Assistant Professor at the University of Dhaka and Research Associate at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies.
His research focuses on contentious politics, environmental justice, climate crisis politics, and resource extraction governance. Methodologically, he employs interpretive frameworks and qualitative interviews, engaging critical social theory. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7 and 13), emphasizing energy sustainability and climate action. He collaborates with the Climate Social Science Network (CSSN) on projects like analyzing South Asian energy policies and climate obstruction strategies in the Global South.
Dr. Faruque’s publications span journals like PLOS Climate, Critical Sociology, and the Asian Journal of Social Science. His current research, funded by CSSN, examines sustainable energy futures in South Asia, particularly Bangladesh’s energy policies. He also studies climate obstruction tactics across Global South nations, contributing to debates on environmental governance and social movements.
He has received the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2019–2021). His advising expertise spans contentious politics, energy transitions, environmental justice, and climate governance. He actively collaborates with multidisciplinary networks like CSSN’s Natural Resources, Energy, and Climate Obstruction working group.
