Nikhil Deb is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Previously, he held academic roles at institutions like Shahjalal University in Bangladesh. His research focuses on the intersection of political economy and environmental/climate justice in the Global South, particularly examining how neoliberal policies exacerbate social and ecological crises in marginalized regions. Key projects include analyzing Bangladesh’s neoliberal trajectory, climate-induced disaster exploitation, and greenwashing in export sectors. His work also explores the long-term impacts of environmental disasters such as the Bhopal gas tragedy and the Magurchara gas explosion.
Deb’s research interests span global political economy, environmental sociology, and social theory. He critiques institutional complicity in ecological harm and advocates for justice-centered frameworks. His recent edited volume Handbook of Social Justice in the Global South (2025) consolidates interdisciplinary perspectives on systemic inequalities. He has published widely in journals like Environmental Sociology and Social Problems, and co-authored chapters in Routledge and Palgrave handbooks.
Deb has received the 2019 Brent K. Marshall Award for his paper on slow violence in Bhopal. His teaching spans courses on international political economy, social theory, and environmental sociology. Current projects include a book manuscript on Bangladesh’s socioecological crises and expanding research on neoliberal governance in India.
