Olivier Bachmann

Prof. Dr. Olivier Bachmann is Full Professor of Volcanology and Magmatic Petrology at ETH Zurich, where he heads the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. His research investigates eruptive dynamics, magma generation, and continental crust evolution through integrated field, geochemical, and modeling approaches.

• Causes and consequences of large explosive eruptions
• Magmatic differentiation processes
• Time scales of magma reservoir evolution
• Controls on volcanic eruption styles

Prof. Bachmann's group combines field geology, geochemical analysis, geophysical data, and numerical modeling to reconstruct magmatic systems from source to surface. His honors include the Joanne Simpson Medal from AGU (2018) and Paul Niggli Medal (2004) for contributions to earth sciences.
