Olivia Lucas is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Louisiana State University (LSU) since 2019, with prior appointments at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Iowa. Her interdisciplinary research bridges music theory, ethnography, sound studies, and ecomusicology, focusing on extreme metal music and its analytical challenges.

Research explores extreme metal music, rhythmic complexity, scrambled vocals, and analytical light shows, challenging conventional musical analysis frameworks. Current projects include global folk metal instrumentation, experimental musician Lingua Ignota, and public scholarship through SMT Pod.
Recent publications include a 2023 Adam Krims Award-winning article in Music Theory Online and co-editing a 2024 volume on undergraduate music pedagogy. She teaches courses in metal music analysis, music and violence, and sonata form.
