Megan Lyons is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Furman University. Her research focuses on music pedagogy, music encoding analysis, Joni Mitchell's alternate guitar tunings, and the art songs of Amy Beach. She co-founded SMT-Pod, an audio publication for the Society for Music Theory, pioneering an Open Collaborative Peer Review Process to modernize academic discourse. Lyons holds a PhD from the University of Connecticut (2022), an MA from CUNY Hunter College (2018), and a BM from the University of Delaware (2016).

Research Interests: Her work integrates critical race theory with music education, emphasizing inclusive pedagogical practices. She has presented at national/international conferences on topics like Joni Mitchell’s compositional techniques and Amy Beach’s underrecognized contributions. Lyons’ dissertation Unsung: A Corpus Study on the Art Songs of Amy Beach highlights overlooked female composers in music history.
