Inessa Bazayev is the Paula G. Manship Professor of Music Theory and Faculty Senate President at Louisiana State University (LSU). She has been teaching at LSU since 2009, with prior roles at Oberlin Conservatory and City College of New York. Her research focuses on Russian and Soviet music, Russian Futurism, and 20th-century music theory. She co-edited Analytical Approaches to 20th-Century Russian Music (Routledge, 2020) and organized major festivals like Stravinsky in America (2022) and the Symposium on Prokofiev and the Russian Tradition (2016).
- Education: PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (2009), under Joseph N. Straus.
- Teaching: Developed courses like Analysis & Performance, Soviet Music & Literature, and Remedial Theory Online. Integrates digital tools, including creating online assessments for Norton’s tonal harmony textbooks.
Her work bridges theory and performance, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections. She founded the Music Forum lecture series and serves as Associate Editor of Music Theory Online. Awards include the LSU Alumni Association Rising Faculty Research Award (2015) and Tiger Athletic Foundation Teaching Award (2014).
