Olivia Carpenter is a Lecturer in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. She holds a PhD from Harvard University (2021) and specializes in Black Studies, Critical Race Theory, and literary history. Her research examines race in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature, focusing on how slavery and abolition shaped literary genres, particularly through 'marriage interruptus' plots that reflect systemic racism. She explores intersections with legal studies, gender/sexuality studies, and material culture.
Her first monograph, Marriage Interruptus, analyzes Black characters' exclusion from marital narratives due to racial politics. She also publishes on how historical texts inform modern discourses on race, including connections to movements like Black Lives Matter. Teaching includes courses on global literatures, Critical Race Theory, and eighteenth-century literature. She currently teaches Critical Practice and A World of Literature II at York.
Olivia’s work bridges historical and contemporary racial dynamics, employing interdisciplinary methods. She has presented at events such as the York Festival of Ideas. Contact: Email | Phone: +44 (0)1904 323334.
