Katherine Charles is an Associate Professor specializing in transatlantic eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature at Washington College's English Department, with research focusing on narrative form and gender in early novels.
Education includes:
- Ph.D. (University of California, Los Angeles, 2016)
- M.Phil. (University of Cambridge, 2003)
- B.A. (Princeton University, 2002)
Her book project 'Losing the Plot' examines interpolated tales in early novels, exploring how embedded narratives challenge conventional plot structures. Research intersects literary form, speech representation, and sociability in colonial contexts.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on eighteenth-century literary reception across centuries, particularly examining how later writers reinterpret and recontextualize earlier works through modernist and postcolonial lenses.
Teaching includes courses on Jane Austen, rise of the novel, Oriental tales, and nineteenth-century Gothic fiction. She serves as Acting Department Chair during spring 2023.
