Oliver Jagoutz is the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and serves as Director of the Earth Resources Laboratory (ERL) since January 2025. He is affiliated with the School of Science and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), where he has been faculty since 2008. Jagoutz chairs the Program in Geology, Geochemistry, and Geobiology (PGGG) until 2024.
- B.Sc. in Chemistry and Geology, University of Mainz
- European Union Erasmus Scholar, ETH Zurich
- Ph.D., ETH Zurich (2004) under J.P. Burg
- Postdoctoral studies, University of Bern with Othmar Müntener
His research focuses on magmatic processes, planetary crust evolution, and tectonic-climate interactions. Fieldwork drives his studies in locations like Greece, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, and the western US, with recent work published in Science Advances and Nature Geoscience on Mars' atmospheric carbon loss and Paleozoic climate regulation via ophiolite weathering.
Jagoutz's publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to Earth's geological evolution and planetary analogs. His work spans natural carbon sequestration, geological hydrogen production, and economic deposit formation, often connecting tectonic dynamics to long-term climate patterns.
- 2016 VAMOS Visiting Scientist, University of Mainz
- 2008 MIT Kerr-McGee Assistant Professorship Chair
- 2003 Visiting Scientist, Tokyo Institute of Technology
As ERL Director, Jagoutz expands research into energy transition topics like carbon sequestration while maintaining the lab's legacy in subsurface resource studies. His leadership follows Laurent Demanet's tenure, with support from EAPS department head Robert van der Hilst.
