Olha Cherednychenko is a Full Professor of European Private Law and Comparative Law at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Law. She holds a Chair established in 2012 and previously taught at Utrecht University (2002–2006) and VU Amsterdam (2006–2012). She earned her LLM (cum laude) and PhD from Utrecht University. Her expertise spans EU internal market law, market regulation, contract law, financial law, fundamental rights, and legal theory.
Her research explores the interplay between private law and regulatory frameworks, focusing on EU financial services, consumer protection, and the impact of digitalization. Notable works include Financial Regulation and Civil Liability in European Law (2020) and Rediscovering the Public/Private Divide in EU Private Law (2020). She directs the Groningen Centre for European Financial Services Law (GCEFSL), promoting sustainable financial practices through interdisciplinary research.
Cherednychenko advises EU institutions and serves on bodies like the International Association of Legal Science (IALS Executive Committee) and the London Centre for Commercial and Financial Law. Her recent articles address the EU Consumer Credit Directive’s digital challenges and private enforcement of EU law.
Her teaching includes courses on European regulatory private law and administrative law. She actively contributes to policy debates, such as her 2021 European Parliament presentation on financial consumer protection in the digital age.
Her research projects investigate sustainability in financial services and the evolving relationship between EU and national private law. She emphasizes bridging regulatory and judicial gaps, advocating for holistic approaches to legal frameworks in dynamic markets.
