With a Ph.D. from Brown University, she brings both academic expertise and deep personal connections to Russian theater through her family lineage.
Professor Partan's research focuses on Russian language, literature, and culture with particular emphasis on the Russian intelligentsia, Russian drama, and the influence of Italian Commedia dell'Arte on Russian artistic imagination. Her scholarly work examines how cultural phenomena evolve through literature, journalism, and theater across different historical periods.
Among her major publications are The Russian Intelligentsia: Myth, Mission, and Metamorphosis, Vagabonding Masks: The Italian Commedia dell'Arte in the Russian Artistic Imagination, and the Russian-language memoir Ty prava, Filumena! (2012). These works demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach connecting literature, theater, and cultural history.
Her teaching portfolio includes Elementary Russian courses, Russian Cinema, Russian Drama and the West, Tales of Desire, and Russian Propaganda in Media & the Arts, reflecting her broad expertise in Russian cultural studies.
Professor Partan's unique perspective is informed by her family background in Russian theater—she is the granddaughter of distinguished actor and director Ruben Simonov, daughter of renowned director Evgeniy Simonov and actress Valeria Razinkova. This personal connection to Russia's theatrical heritage enriches her academic work and provides distinctive insights into Russian cultural traditions.
