Professor Olga Garcia Mancheño is a University Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Münster, Germany. She leads an active research group focused on cutting-edge catalytic methodologies and has established herself as a leading researcher in organocatalysis and photochemistry. Her research program spans multiple collaborative projects including the CRC 1459 and IRTG 2678 initiatives.
Prof. Garcia Mancheño's research interests center on developing novel catalytic strategies for organic synthesis, with particular emphasis on anion-binding catalysis, halogen-bonding catalysis, and photocatalytic transformations. Her work bridges fundamental mechanistic understanding with practical synthetic applications, focusing on enantioselective reactions, C-H functionalization, and the development of new catalytic systems that mimic biological processes. She has pioneered approaches in supramolecular catalysis where non-covalent interactions enable unprecedented reactivity and selectivity.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research combining photochemistry with asymmetric organocatalysis, particularly in anion-binding and halogen-bonding systems. Her group has made significant contributions to the fields of trifluoromethylation, C-H functionalization, and the development of new catalytic methodologies for complex molecule synthesis. Recent work shows increasing integration of computational methods and machine learning approaches to optimize photocatalytic reactions.
Among her notable scientific awards are the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant (2017), the ORCHEM Prize (2016), and the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award (2012). Her research has been consistently recognized with multiple fellowships and awards throughout her career, reflecting the high impact of her contributions to organic chemistry.
Prof. Garcia Mancheño has successfully mentored numerous PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry. Her research is supported by major funding sources including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the European Research Council (ERC), the Chemical Industry Fund (VCI), and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She has led multiple collaborative research projects including the CRC 858 'Synergetic Effects in Chemistry - From Additivity to Cooperativity' and currently participates in the CRC 1459 and IRTG 2678 initiatives.
The Garcia Mancheño laboratory maintains a vibrant research environment with state-of-the-art facilities for organic synthesis, photochemistry, and mechanistic studies. The group regularly participates in collaborative events with other research teams including the Fernandez group, as evidenced by their joint participation in the ChemCup 2019. The lab culture emphasizes both scientific excellence and team building, with regular group activities documented throughout the years from 2009 to present.
