Oleksandr Frei is a Researcher at the Section for Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Biosciences, University of Oslo Faculty of Medicine, and a key member of the NORMENT (Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research). His work focuses on Genetics of Psychiatric Disorders, particularly uncovering rare genetic variants and gene expression patterns to address the hidden heritability of schizophrenia and other mental disorders.
With a PhD in Mathematics and Machine Learning from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (2013), Frei brings a computational perspective to psychiatry. His prior industrial experience includes developing software at Microsoft (2010-2013) and Schlumberger (2014-2016), where he worked on search engines and seismic data analysis, respectively.
His recent research highlights include:
- Developing tools like MiXeR and FEMA for advanced genetic finemapping and neuroimaging analysis.
- Exploring genetic overlaps between psychiatric disorders and traits such as immune markers, metabolic profiles, and brain morphology.
- Contributing to precision psychiatry through studies on genetic risk stratification and cross-disorder pleiotropy.
Frei's work bridges computational methods, genomics, and clinical neuroscience, with a strong emphasis on multi-ancestry studies and polygenic risk scores. He has published extensively in journals like Nature Communications, Molecular Psychiatry, and Biological Psychiatry.
