Dr. Olaf Werder is a Senior Lecturer and Degree Director of the Master of Health Communication program in the Discipline of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. He holds a BBA from Universität Dortmund, an MS in Advertising from the University of Illinois, and a PhD from the University of Florida. Prior to joining Sydney in 2011, he held academic positions at the University of Florida and the University of New Mexico.
His research focuses on transforming health communication into an exchange tool for behavioral change, emphasizing community-based participatory research (CBPR) and health humanities. Key areas include narrative approaches in healthcare, environmental influences on health in the Pacific region, and health equity strategies. He collaborates internationally with institutions like Sorbonne University and Cornell University on projects addressing health-environment interactions and policy.
Awards include the 2014 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching and recognition from the Australian Association for Social Marketing. He supervises HDR students exploring topics like anti-smoking messaging in Indonesia and health communication in crisis management.
Dr. Werder teaches core units in health communication and leads the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies and Charles Perkins Centre initiatives. His upcoming book, *Transformational Health Communication*, advances interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare systems.
