Olabisi D. Akinkugbe is an Associate Professor and the Purdy Crawford Chair in Business Law at Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law. His research focuses on international economic law, African regional trade agreements, and the reform of international investment frameworks. He has authored over 38 scholarly papers on topics such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Eurocentrism in international law, and climate justice.
His work critically examines the socio-legal dimensions of international economic law in Africa, emphasizing equitable trade policies and developmental regionalism. Notable contributions include analyses of dispute settlement mechanisms under the AfCFTA, the role of African multilateral financial institutions, and the intersection of race and investment law.
He has engaged in cross-disciplinary collaborations, co-authoring studies on climate finance, judicialization of election disputes, and the challenges of public-sector whistleblowing in Nigeria. His research also addresses systemic issues like illicit financial flows and the need for a just green investment order.
Akinkugbe frequently contributes to policy dialogues and academic symposiums, advocating for pluralizing international law to reflect Global South perspectives. His recent work explores preferred creditor status reforms for African financial institutions and the implications of debt-for-climate swaps.
