Odette Dempsey-Caputo is a Sessional Faculty member at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Faculty of Law, teaching Community Lawyering for the 2022-23 academic year. She holds a BA from the University of Victoria and a JD from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. Her career includes private practice in Kamloops, focusing on civil litigation, estates law, and corporate law, followed by pioneering roles in legal clinics.
Odette played a foundational role in TRU’s Community Legal Clinic as a supervising lawyer before establishing the Kamloops & District Elizabeth Fry Society Legal Clinic, where she currently serves as Senior Clinic Lawyer. Her work emphasizes legal services for marginalized communities and public legal education. She is pursuing an LL.M. at the University of Ottawa, researching technology’s role in enhancing access to justice for rural, equity-seeking groups in British Columbia’s interior.
Odette actively contributes to legal education as a moot judge for TRU Law teams, a CBABC committee member, and through seminar presentations for legal professionals and the public. She balances clinical legal practice with managerial responsibilities, advocacy for underrepresented groups, and advancing innovative justice solutions through technology.
