Professor Nusrat Husain holds the Clinical Chair in Psychiatry and is the Director of Global Mental Health at the Division of Psychology & Mental Health, University of Manchester. He is also an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. His expertise spans cultural psychiatry, global mental health, and applied research on culturally adapted therapies. He holds a Doctorate in Medicine (2002) from the University of Manchester and a Master of Public Health (1989) from Emory University.
His research focuses on improving mental health access in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and addressing disparities in the UK. He has led projects funded by MRC, Wellcome Trust, and Grand Challenges Canada, establishing research units in Pakistan, Kenya, and beyond. His work emphasizes culturally sensitive care for ethnic minorities and marginalized communities.
Key achievements include training over 500 clinicians in research methods, initiating Pakistan’s first mental health nursing training programs, and organizing international conferences on culture and mental health. He leads collaborations with institutions like the University of Toronto and Dow University of Health Sciences.
Prof Husain has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to book chapters. His awards include the WHO Prize for best diplomate (1993) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Academic Researcher of the Year (2016).
