Nuno Monteiro was an Associate Professor of Political Science at Yale University (2009–2021), specializing in international relations theory and security studies. He authored Theory of Unipolar Politics (2014) and co-authored Nuclear Politics: The Strategic Causes of Proliferation (2017). His research addressed unipolarity’s stability, nuclear strategy, and state behavior under power asymmetries.
Education: PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago (2009), B.A. from the University of Minho (Portugal, 1997). He directed Yale’s International Security Studies program (2017–2020) and was a research fellow at the MacMillan Center.
Research interests included military power dynamics, alliance politics, and historical case studies of conflict. Notable awards include the APSA Heinz Eulau Prize (2017). He advised PhD students like David Minchin and engaged in public commentary via Foreign Affairs, Project Syndicate, and The Guardian.
