Professor Nuala Mcgrath is a Professor of Epidemiology & Sexual Health at the University of Southampton with a joint appointment between the Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences. She is an NIHR Global Health Research Professor with over 35 years of experience in HIV surveillance, treatment and prevention studies and intervention trials in sub-Saharan Africa.
Her primary research focus is on intervention development and evaluation research to improve couples' health in sub-Saharan Africa and the UK. Key research areas include:
- Epidemiology of HIV and sexual health
- Couples-based health interventions
- Digital health solutions for resource-constrained settings
- Diabetes management in low-resource contexts
- Public health interventions for vulnerable populations
Professor Mcgrath's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on couples' health, HIV prevention and management, and digital health interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. Her work often employs mixed methods approaches, combining quantitative epidemiological studies with qualitative insights to develop effective health interventions. A notable trend in her recent work is the development and evaluation of couple-based interventions for HIV and chronic disease management across multiple African settings.

Professor Mcgrath currently supervises PhD students Matthew James Johnson (PhD Geography), Lucy Victoria Lynch (PhD Social Stats & Demo PT), and Jiawei Hu (PhD in Health Sciences). She has received funding from major organizations including the National Institutes of Health, Medical Research Council, and Wellcome Trust for her research projects.
She is actively involved in several research groups including the Global Health (Demography) group, Population Health Sciences Institute, Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), Centre for Population Change, and Family and Social Demography.
