Shabbar Jaffar is a Professor at University College London (UCL), serving as the Institute Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health. Prior to this, he was the Head of the Department of International Public Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (2015–2022) and a Professor of Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (1996–2015). He has worked in The Gambia, South Africa, Uganda, and Malawi, with current partnerships in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
Research interests focus on
- Prevention and management of HIV, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa
- Evidence generation for health policy and practice
- Integrated care for chronic conditions in health facilities and communities
- Diabetes prevention among people with HIV
- Multi-disciplinary research teams
- Equitable partnerships with policy-makers, healthcare providers, and communities

- Times Higher Education International Partnership of the Year (2021)
- Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2016–2021)
- Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (2011)
