Noëlle McAfee is a Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Emory University, with secondary appointments in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Texas (1998) and has taught at institutions like UMass Lowell, Brandeis, and George Mason University. Her research integrates critical theory, psychoanalysis, feminist philosophy, and political theory. She directs Emory's Psychoanalytic Studies Program and is affiliated with Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Her notable works include Fear of Breakdown: Politics and Psychoanalysis (2019), which won the 2020 Courage to Dream Book Prize, and Democracy and the Political Unconscious (2008). McAfee’s honors include the Robert A. Paul Scholarship Award (2022) and the Laughlin Fellowship (2016). She has advised numerous PhD students and contributed to initiatives on deliberative democracy, digital media, and public philosophy.
McAfee’s academic leadership includes roles as Fox Center Senior Fellow (2016–2017), Kettering Foundation Principal Investigator (2006–2010), and board memberships in feminist philosophy and public intellectual networks. Her interdisciplinary work bridges philosophy, psychoanalysis, and civic engagement, emphasizing the political unconscious and democratic theory.
