Norman R. Kreisman is a Professor and Vice-Chair in the Department of Physiology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He transitioned to part-time status in 2017 but remains active in teaching medical and graduate students. His academic journey includes a B.A. in Psychology (Arizona State University, 1965), M.S. in Physiology (University of Michigan, 1968), and Ph.D. in Physiology (Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1971).

Research interests focus on neuroprotection mechanisms against hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, including ischemic preconditioning and the role of erythropoietin. His early work explored cerebral blood flow in epilepsy.
Teaching contributions include co-founding the Medical Neuroscience Course (1971) and directing it (1980–1984), which earned Owl Club recognition as the best first-year course. He also co-founded Tulane’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience (1986) and directed the Human Physiology Course (1997–2018), which won 13 'Best First-Year Course' awards and six overall 'Best Course' accolades.
Current roles emphasize teaching; he no longer conducts research or trains students in research.
