Norah L. A. Gharala is Associate Professor of Colonial Mexican History and Director of Communications at the University of Houston. She holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies from Wesleyan University (2007) and a Ph.D. in History from Johns Hopkins University (2014). Her research explores New Spain's connections to global empires, focusing on taxation, slavery, and cross-cultural exchanges.
Dr. Gharala's current projects examine Pacific/Indian Ocean connections to New Spain and property ownership in early North American families. She created the digital project 'Slavery in Early Mexico' and mentors undergraduate researchers through the Mellon Research Scholars Program.
