Herman Bennett is an Executive Officer and Distinguished Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center, holding appointments in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies, History, Africana Studies, American Studies, and Global Early Modern Studies. He directs the Institute for Research on the African Diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean (IRADAC). Bennett earned his Ph.D. in Latin American history from Duke University as a Mellon Humanities Scholar. His research focuses on the African diaspora, colonial Mexico, and the intersection of race, sovereignty, and colonialism in the Atlantic World.
His work emphasizes the agency of enslaved and free Africans in colonial societies, challenging Eurocentric narratives of early modern history. Key contributions include analyzing African-European diplomatic interactions in the early modern period and reinterpreting the socio-political dynamics of Afro-Mexican communities.
Bennett has held prestigious fellowships from the Mellon Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies. His awards include election to the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars (2016) and editorial roles at The Americas and Hispanic American Historical Review.
Grants include a $175,000 Mellon Sawyer Seminar (2014) on 'Cultures and Histories of Freedom.' His research and teaching bridge global early modern studies with critical race theory, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across historical disciplines.
