Prof. Dr. Nora Derbal is a Junior Professor of Islamic Studies at the Department of History and Culture of the Middle East, University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on the social and cultural dynamics of early Islamic societies through interdisciplinary methodologies.
- Projects: Social Contexts of Rebellion in the Early Islamic Period (SCORE), Persian Letters from the 'second Iran', The Evolution of Islamic Societies (c.600-1600 CE): Algorithmic Analysis into Social History, The intertwined world of the oral and written transmission of sacred traditions in the Middle East (InterSaME)
Her work bridges historical analysis with computational approaches, particularly in studying Islamic social structures and textual traditions. Current initiatives include collaborations under the RomanIslam – Center for Comparative Empire and Transcultural Studies.
