Leyla von Mende is a Lecturer for Turkish and Ottoman Turkology at the Asia Africa Institute of the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Department of History and Culture of the Ancient Orient. Her research focuses on social and cultural dynamics in the Middle East, particularly during the early Islamic period, with projects such as Social Contexts of Rebellion in the Early Islamic Period (SCORE) and The intertwined world of the oral and written transmission of sacred traditions in the Middle East (InterSaME). She also contributes to Turkish Studies and provides student advisory services.

Her research spans Islamic history, social history, textual analysis of Persian letters, and transcultural studies, with projects examining the algorithmic analysis of societal evolution and cultural preservation in Egypt and Iraq (e.g., COBHUNI FGM-Egypt, Rifaiya-Iraq).
