Dr. Noell Wilson is a Croft Associate Professor of History and International Studies at the University of Mississippi's Croft Institute for International Studies. She specializes in Japanese history, East Asian studies, and maritime security. Her research explores early modern state formation and the integration of Japan and Korea into North Pacific commercial networks via 19th-century US whalers. She holds a BA from Wake Forest University, an AM from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard. Wilson currently holds a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award (2017-2018) to research American whalers in the North Pacific.

Her research interests include the intersection of maritime security, state formation, and transnational cultural exchange. She teaches Japanese history and co-leads National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) workshops for secondary school teachers. Wilson’s upcoming book focuses on 19th-century American whalers in the North Pacific.
