Associate Professor Brian Dowdle serves as Co-Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Montana. He teaches courses on Japanese literature, language, and history, drawing on his expertise in 19th-century Japanese literary studies.
- Education: Ph.D. in Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Michigan; MA in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University
Brian has held leadership roles in academic organizations, including Chair of the Council of Conferences for the Board Association for Asian Studies (2018–19) and President of the Western Association for Asian Studies (2016–18). He actively contributes to educational programs like the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA), organizing seminars and workshops on topics ranging from Edo-period material culture to East Asian futurisms.
