Frank L. Chance is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. His research focuses on Asian Art, with specialization in Early Modern Japanese Art, including literati painting, calligraphy, Buddhist arts, and East Asian ceramics. He teaches courses such as 'Monsters of Japan' and 'Buddhist Arts of East Asia,' emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and artistic studies.
His work explores themes like cultural transmission in Edo-period Japan, studio practices of artists like Tani Bunchō, and the intersection of religion and art in medieval Japan. Chance's publications span critical analyses of Japanese art history, book reviews on Western-Japanese artistic exchanges, and studies of regional ceramic traditions.
