Noam Lefler is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London's School of History, specializing in early modern Jewish history with a focus on religious responses to change. His work examines material alterations in late medieval religious codices and the doctrinal evolution of Sabbatian messianic movements. Currently, he contributes to the AHRC-funded 'Hidden in Plain Sight' project, using digital technologies to study ancient book usage.
Education: PhD from Hebrew University of Jerusalem (dissertation on 17th-century Sabbatean sect responses post-Messiah Sabbatai Sevi's death). Key research areas include manuscript analysis, esoteric theology, and Mediterranean Jewish cultural history. He has edited critical editions of works by Abraham Yakhini, Abraham Michael Cardoso, and Hazan Israel, published by Holzer Books and Cherub Press.
His recent scholarship explores the occultation doctrine in Modena, Sabbatian mystical thought, and amulets in heretical contexts. Engagements include presentations at the World Congress of Jewish Studies (2022), the National Library of Israel (2022), and academic conferences in Baltimore and Rome.
