Nitin Varma

Dr. Nitin Varma is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz Centre for Modern Oriental Studies (ZMO) in Berlin, Germany, affiliated with the "State and Society" research unit. His fixed-term position spanned from June 2024 to May 2025, focusing on the intersection of citizenship, labor, and temporality within postcolonial South Asia.

His research examines the understudied relationship between temporality and social movements, specifically analyzing domestic workers' movements in South Asia from the 1930s to 1960s. He investigates how temporal language and idiom were strategically employed to articulate political visions, highlighting conflicts between developmental state futures and movement-driven temporalities. This work bridges labor history, social movement theory, and climate politics through a unique temporal lens.
