Nisa Ari is an Associate Professor of Art History at Montserrat College of Art. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. from MIT's History, Theory, and Criticism of Art and Architecture program and a B.A. from Stanford University. Prior to Montserrat, she held roles such as the inaugural Beinecke Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Gallery of Art (2021-23) and visiting appointments at Georgetown University (2023) and the University of Houston (2019-21).
Her research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century visual practices in the Middle East, particularly examining cultural politics and the evolution of art institutions post-Ottoman Empire dissolution. Her current book project analyzes transformative political shifts in Palestine from Ottoman rule to the establishment of Israel. She has published in journals like Third Text, Arab Studies Journal, and Thresholds, supported by fellowships from institutions such as CASVA, Mellon Foundation, and the Terra Foundation.
Dr. Ari has curated exhibitions at Qalandiya International Art Biennial and MIT’s Keller Gallery, and served as a book reviews editor for the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran, and Turkey (AMCA) since 2018. She teaches courses on Modern Art, Islamic Art, Middle Eastern Art History, and Global Photography at Montserrat.
