Ilan Benattar is the Robert F. & Patricia G. Ross Weis Visiting Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies & History at Franklin & Marshall College. His research focuses on modern Jewish politics, culture, and intellectual life in the Ottoman Middle East, particularly the history of Ottoman Jewish liberal intellectuals like Abraham Galante. He holds a joint Ph.D. in History/Hebrew & Judaic Studies from NYU (2023), and has taught at institutions including SUNY Purchase and Occidental College.
- Education: NYU (Ph.D., M.Phil in Hebrew & Judaic Studies); CUNY (M.A. Middle Eastern Studies); Binghamton University (B.A. History & Arabic Studies, summa cum laude).
- Research Interests: Class formation, intra-communal conflict, trans-regional networks, and global Jewish identities.
His current book project examines the 'Galante Network' of Ottoman Jewish intellectuals (1892–1912). Recent work includes conference presentations on topics like water purity traditions and press censorship in late Ottoman Jewish culture.
- Awards: Includes the American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellowship (2021), NYU Torch Fellowship (2020–2021), and multiple language fellowships.
Teaching emphasizes global perspectives, using memoirs, film, and visual art. Courses at F&M include surveys of Jewish history, antisemitism, Israel/Palestine, and 'The Arab Jew' identity.
