Professor Karène Sanchez-Summerer chairs the Middle Eastern Studies department at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on modern Middle Eastern history, particularly Christian Arab communities in Mandate Palestine, Ottoman social histories, and transnational connections. She has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like Ecole française de Rome and IREMAM, and leads major projects including the ANR-funded 'Grammars of Preaching' and NWO's 'European Cultural Diplomacy' initiative. Her work bridges colonial archives, religious networks, and diaspora studies, with notable contributions to understanding minority identities in 19th-20th century Levant. Awards include the Aspasia Grant and multiple public engagement grants addressing historical narratives of the Holy Land.
Her teaching spans BA/MA courses on Middle Eastern sectarianism, cultural diplomacy, and transnational histories. Current PhD supervision includes projects on Ottoman-Arab migrations, post-traumatic memory, and Moroccan Jewish diasporas. She collaborates internationally through platforms like the MisSMO consortium and co-edits the 'Languages and Culture in History' series for Amsterdam University Press.
Recent publications (2024-2025) analyze missionary roles in the Arab Revolt, visual archives of Mandate Palestine, and linguistic policies in colonial contexts. She actively engages public discourse through festivals like 'MENA is here' and podcasts exploring global Middle Eastern histories.
