Michael Provence is Professor of Modern Middle East History at UC San Diego, specializing in 20th century Arab East and post-Ottoman state formation.
Research focuses on:
- Continuities between Ottoman and mandate periods
- Anti-colonial insurgencies
- Social history of the interwar Levant
- Legacies of colonial partition
His award-winning books include 'The Great Syrian Revolt' and 'The Last Ottoman Generation'. Provence has held fellowships at Institut d'Études Avancées de Nantes and Zentrum Moderner Orient, conducting extensive archival research across Europe and the Middle East.
