Prof. Nina Toth serves as a Full Professor in the Department of Vegetable Crops at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Agriculture, where she has advanced sustainable vegetable production methodologies since 1993 through research, teaching, and international collaboration.
Her academic foundation includes:
- B.Sc. (1980-1985) from University of Zagreb Faculty of Agricultural Sciences
- M.Sc. (1983-1993) from University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture
- Ph.D. (1996-2002) from University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture
Dr. Toth's research centers on vegetable crop innovation through four pillars: introduction of new species and technologies, integrated/organic/soilless production systems, fertilization effects on nutritional value, and functional food development. Her work emphasizes hydroponic nettle (Urtica dioica) cultivation to enhance bioactive compounds under climate stress.
Analysis of her 2022-2024 publications reveals a concentrated focus on optimizing hydroponic systems for nettle, chickpea, and leafy greens through nutrient solution management, irrigation strategies, and microbial interactions. This research consistently targets yield improvement, morphological trait optimization, and nutritional quality enhancement for functional food applications.
Dr. Toth has secured significant funding across four project categories:
- Scientific Research: Croatian Science Foundation grants (e.g., nettle nutrition projects) and EU PRIMA programs
- Regional Development: Garlic production revitalization in Zadar County through government partnerships
- Educational Innovation: Curriculum modernization and internship enhancement via EU Social Fund
- University Support: Microgreen nutrition and biostimulant studies
She operates from the Garden House Experiment Station within the Department of Vegetable Crops, maintains active membership in the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), and collaborates with institutions including the University of Ljubljana and CIHEAM Bari.
