Nina S. Mounts is a Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Northern Illinois University (NIU), teaching courses including Adolescent Development (PSYC 424), Developmental Laboratory (PSYC 464), Social and Personality Development (PSYC 676), and Diversity and the Adolescent Experience (PSYC 466).
She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. Her research focuses on adolescent social development, particularly parent-child and peer relationships, with emphasis on how parents manage adolescents' peer dynamics across ethnically diverse populations. Recent work examines cross-cultural comparisons between Ghana and the United States, maternal consulting behaviors, and pandemic-related economic stress impacts.
Analysis of her 2015-2025 publications reveals consistent methodological innovation through multi-informant approaches (adolescents, parents, observers) and thematic concentration on family-peer linkages. Her scholarship increasingly addresses contextual factors like cultural diversity and socioeconomic stressors while maintaining core focus on adolescent relational development.
