Dr. Nina Penner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at Brock University. Her research bridges musicology and analytic philosophy, focusing on opera, musical theatre, film, and video games. She explores how these mediums tell stories and engage audiences, particularly through her book Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater (2020). Her current work examines ludomusicology, analyzing how music shapes agency in video games. Penner teaches courses on global music cultures and has been featured on The Foreword podcast discussing decolonizing music education. Her recent projects include collaborating with Indigenous-led opera groups to challenge colonial narratives in classical music. She has contributed to The Conversation on systemic issues in orchestral music and serves as Principal Investigator on an SSHRC-funded project exploring Indigenous-led opera models.

Research Interests: Ludomusicology, decolonizing musicology, opera narrative theory, interdisciplinary collaborations between music and philosophy. Her work emphasizes the transformative potential of diverse artistic practices to address historical inequities in classical music.
