Dr. Nina Maxwell is a Principal Research Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University and specialty co-lead for social care research in Wales. As a chartered psychologist and mixed-methods researcher, she focuses on adolescent development, workforce training, and private family law systems.
Her research examines youth vulnerability contexts including child criminal exploitation, adoption processes, home education, and youth violence. Current projects map referral pathways for criminally exploited youth in Wales and evaluate interventions supporting families affected by exploitation. Additional work analyzes workforce development in social care, including evaluations of fast-track training programs and Video Interaction Guidance.
Publications demonstrate expertise in qualitative methods, evidence reviews for family law, and co-designed research with vulnerable populations. Recent studies examine foster carer well-being, father engagement in child protection, and supported visitation programs for children with incarcerated mothers.
She leads the Complex Safeguarding Wales initiative, developing resources for families and practitioners addressing child criminal exploitation.
