Nina Cedergreen serves as Professor in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science, specializing in the Section for Environmental Chemistry and Physics. Her research investigates chemical-environment interactions with emphasis on cocktail effects and synergistic stressors including parasites, starvation, and climate variables.
Her primary research focuses on predicting chemical synergies and hormetic responses through experimental work at the Environmental Chemistry and Physics laboratory (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/env_chem_phys/et/). Key interests span ecotoxicology, pesticide risk assessment, and environmental chemistry, particularly examining how chemical mixtures interact with biological stressors in natural systems.
Recent publications reveal strong trends in emerging contaminant analysis, pharmaceutical toxicity in aquatic ecosystems, and methodological innovations in toxicity testing. Her work consistently bridges laboratory findings with real-world environmental challenges, especially regarding wastewater pollutants and soil contamination from waste fertilization.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Outstanding Researcher in the field of hormesis (2007)
Cedergreen teaches BSc "Environmental Chemistry in Biological Systems" and leads MSc courses in "Toxicology & Ecotoxicology" and "Pesticide use, Mode of Action and Ecotoxicology," plus the PhD "Dynamic Modelling of Toxic Effects." She has mentored over 100 BSc/MSc students and 20+ PhD/postdocs while maintaining active roles in SETAC Europe and AMRAP research consortia.
Her laboratory drives experimental research on chemical stressors through national and international collaborations, with recent work focusing on analytical method validation, pharmaceutical impacts in sediments, and cross-stressor interactions in ecological risk assessment.
