Nina Bernstein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Arts and Science at MacEwan University, Edmonton, Alberta. Her research focuses on structural and molecular biology, particularly DNA repair enzymes and their mechanisms.
Her educational background includes a B.Sc. in Honours Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, both from the University of Alberta. During her Ph.D., she worked under Dr. Michael James on the structural biology of malarial proteinases, and completed postdoctoral research with Dr. Mark Glover on DNA repair enzymes.
Dr. Bernstein's research interests center on the structural and functional characterization of DNA repair enzymes in model organisms such as C. elegans and D. melanogaster, as well as the development of glycerol biosensors. Her work bridges biochemistry, structural biology, and DNA repair mechanisms, with applications in understanding health and disease.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on DNA repair enzymes, particularly polynucleotide kinase/phosphatase, exploring their structural basis, molecular characterization, and potential as targets for cancer therapy. These works span disciplines including biochemistry, molecular biology, and cancer research.
Her scientific awards and grants include:
- MacEwan University, Professional Development Additional Fund awards (2012, 2013)
- MacEwan University Faculty of Arts and Science Fund award (2012)
- MacEwan University Research, Scholarly Activity and Creative Achievement Fund (2011-2012)
Dr. Bernstein is available to supervise senior undergraduate students in independent research projects. Her grant history reflects active support for her research program from MacEwan University, enabling her work in DNA repair and enzyme characterization.
