Nina Atanasova is a Researcher at the Department of Microbiology, University of Helsinki, and a key contributor to the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Program. She supervises doctoral students in Microbiology and Biotechnology and Integrative Life Science programs.
Her research spans microbiology, virology, and environmental science, focusing on bioaerosols, virus transmission in extreme environments (e.g., Arctic/Antarctic), and ice nucleation by microorganisms. Recent work includes studying SARS-CoV-2 aerosol transmission in mink, bacteriophage freezing resistance, and aerosol reduction in dental care.
Scientific awards:
- Certificate of Outstanding Contribution by post-doc (2015)
She leads projects like Biological Ice Nucleation (2025) and Bioaerosols and Ice Nucleation (2025), funded by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. She also participated in the Center of Excellence in Virus Research (2011–2016). Her peer review activities include journals like Elsevier and Ashgate Publishing House, and she presented at the XXIV Biennial Conference on Phage/Virus Assembly (2015).
